We are proud to announce the successful demonstration of our WAVE 300 twin electric outboard system powering Africa’s first electric ferry, the Electric OMIBUS, at Falomo Jetty in Lagos. The event, hosted by Caverton Marine—ExploMar’s local partner in Nigeria last week — began on Monday, November 24th, and brought together government officials, marine experts, and media to witness this milestone in sustainable, zero-emission marine and inland water transportation.

Jonathan Wang, board member of Explomar, attended the whole week event and commented on the event: “I am glad to attend the event held by Caverton. ExploMar profoundly honored to be the technology partner empowering Caverton Marine’s vision for the Electric OMIBUS. This successful demonstration proves that high-performance, sustainable electric propulsion is not just the future—it is the reality for African water transport today.”
OMIBUS, a 12-meter, 28-seat fully electric ferry, brings together a Caverton-built FRP passenger hull and ExploMar’s advanced high-performance electric propulsion system. Powered by twin WAVE 300 electric outboards and two HEDB 125 kWh batteries, the vessel achieved a maximum speed of 32 knots during testing and delivers a fully loaded cruising range of up to 3 hours at 10–15 knots. With a 120 kW fast-charging station, the ferry can be fully recharged in one hour, supporting up to six hours of daily operation.

Designed to operate entirely on electric propulsion, the Electric OMIBUS produces zero carbon emissions while significantly reducing operational noise and maintenance costs compared to diesel ferries. These results directly support Lagos State’s vision for safer mobility, climate resilience, and long-term cost efficiency.
Mr. Bode Makanjuola, Chief Executive Officer of Caverton Offshore Support Group, said, “The Omibus Electric Ferry is a proud Nigerian initiative and marks a major step in improving transportation in Lagos. With the state’s push to strengthen water mobility, we’ve gone from building our first electric ferry to delivering multiple units now in operation. The Omibus shows what the future of mobility can be—quiet, clean, and efficient for everyday Lagosians.”

The low engine noise of ExploMar’s electric propulsion system allows passengers to make phone calls comfortably during their commute, while its fully electric design eliminates fuel pilferage—a common challenge with traditional operators—since the system cannot be tampered with. Beyond these advantages, the ferry delivers the broader benefits of electric mobility: lower long-term maintenance costs, enhanced safety, and a cleaner, quieter travel experience.

The OMIBUS Electric Ferry marks a milestone for Nigeria’s water transport, powered by ExploMar’s high-performance electric propulsion. This collaboration with Caverton Marine shows how advanced electric technology can inspire cleaner, faster, and more sustainable water mobility worldwide.
